I have looked all over for some simple step-by-step directions on how to use Homeport. Thank you! That sounds great, but my older Garmin does not use sd cards.
It uses the proprietary G2 sticks that I have not found an adapter for to work with. Not being very computer literate to begin with, any suggestions to work around that? They just suggest a new unit that of course is not compatible with the sonar or radar.
Carolyn Great article. I got Homeport just after Garmin released it about 7 years ago. I never did see what Homeport replaced. I transfer my data as you describe and I use Homeport for most of my planning — including making routes.
But I do often transfer my tracks from the to Homeport. One of the things I like about Homeport is the ablity to set up lots of folders and subfolders. One of my favorite uses is for determining predicted current. Also, the search feature is great. My backup is a Nexus 7 tablet with Plan2Nav. It uses c-map charts but, like you, I can transfer. Is that what you use the new ipad for — your backup? Great points about Hoomeport.
Yes, the iPad is the backup but we got it for many other things, too! Maybe in a few months, you can write something on what you use yours for that is cruising related.
Thanks much. Adding Active Captain data is invaluable. I had played with it just a little. Helpful article, however, I believe Garmin has discontinued the blue chart app which I still have on my iPad in favor of more expensive electronic charts that can be shared among devices and an active captain app. Not sure exactly what the current status is — it seems to be changing day by day.

I name with start and end points with a dash in between. I use the best abbreviation I can for the number of characters I have, and try to use the same abbreviation for the same place consistently.
